I recently bought a Mi A2 phone. It has Android One, which is just the pure stock Android experience. There is UI attached to it(which is surprising, coz its Xiaomi). Any way, as I’m using it in my daily life. I thought about how smartphones in general have become very important to my life.
From the break of dawn, I continue using my smartphone to browse the internet all day long. Its funny that a few years ago, internet was a luxury. Had one of those limited plans, of 1 GB for a month. How times have changed, now no one cares about it, India has unlimited data plans now, which is perfect for our phone-centric lives now. Apps like Facebook, Instagram and YouTube dominated your day.
Personally, I use Facebook only once a day, as I think its just garbage. I like browsing through Instagram, there’s only quality there. Then, I have Reddit, I am actually a noob to reddit, but I’m learning all its intricacies. So in a nutshell, I don’t use smartphones like all you teenagers out there. Instead I use it for the reasons I love the Internet.
Firstly, I browse around the news sites, gathering every info about new tech, conspiracy theories and politics. Every day I have a mini-fascination of something, today I had a fascination of Old Blackberry phones, so I searched around Wikipedia for all the info I can gather. Internet is a world of information, and I tend to gather what I can in my limited time. Now one of my favourite past-time is to sit on the terrace at night and read about UFOs, conspiracy theories about aliens, with spooky ambient music.
Secondly, I use it to watch YouTube, which too, is for gathering information. I waste most of my life on YouTube, but I also watch it while I’m doing some work that doesn’t require full attention i.e. drawing or programming.
So are smartphones bad? Well for me, I can’t live my life without it, and not for the reasons you think. I use it connect to the world and read about interesting stuff. When I was a kid, I use to gobble up 1000 page encyclopedias within 3 days. All for my lust for knowledge. I always imagined to have the internet in the palm of my hands to research about any topic and not have to be limited by the page limit of my books, which the smartphone gives to me. Unlimited access to a huge library of data.
This whole blog, is more about Internet(I realised as I’m writing this) rather than the device that lets me access it. But to end it, smartphone makes the Internet more portable, so it kind of is about them.
Personally, I am saddened and disappointed by the people who misuse the internet for narcissistic purposes and Facebook(I don’t need to elaborate). Lets not get into ranting, and conclude this blog post.
Thank you for reading,
Sam McLaren
